A Matrix-free Preconditioner for the Helmholtz Equation based on the Fast Multipole Method

چکیده
Fast multipole methods (FMM) were originally developed for accelerating N body problems for particle-based methods. FMM is more than an N -body solver, however. Recent efforts to view the FMM as an elliptic Partial Differential Equation (PDE) solver have opened the possibility to use it as a preconditioner for a broader range of applications. FMM can solve Helmholtz problems with optimal O(N logN) complexity, has compute-bound inner kernels, and highly asynchronous communication patterns. The combination of these features makes FMM an interesting candidate as a preconditioner for sparse solvers on architectures of the future. The use of FMM as a preconditioner allows us to use lower order multipole expansions than would be required as a solver because individual solves need not be accurate. This reduces the amount of computation and communication significantly and makes the time-to-solution competitive with state-of-the-art preconditioners. Furthermore, the high asynchronicity of FMM allows it to scale to much larger core counts than factorization-based and multilevel methods. We describe our tests in reproducible details with freely available codes.

Combining analytic preconditioner and Fast Multipole Method for the 3-D Helmholtz equation
The paper presents a detailed numerical study of an iterative solution to 3-D sound-hard acoustic scattering problems at high frequency considering the Combined Field Integral Equation (CFIE). We propose a combination of an OSRC preconditioning technique and a Fast Multipole Method which leads to a fast and efficient algorithm independently of both a frequency increase and a mesh refinement. Th...
متن کاملCombining Osrc Preconditioning and Fast Multipole Method for the Helmholtz Equation
Talk Abstract The numerical solution of time-harmonic scattering problems remains a challenging problem in the high frequency regime due to its specific computational bottlenecks. The techniques based on integral equations lead to the resolution of systems where the involved matrices are dense and usually badly conditioned. Several studies have been managed for years and years to overcome these...
متن کاملFast Multipole Accelerated Boundary Element Methods for the 3D Helmholtz Equation
Abstract The development of a fast multipole method accelerated iterative solution of the boundary element equations for large problems involving hundreds of thousands elements for the Helmholtz equations in 3D is described. The BEM requires several approximate computations (numerical quadrature, approximations of the boundary shapes using elements) and the convergence criterion for iterative c...
متن کاملTitle Preconditioning based on Calderon’s formulae for periodic fast multipole methods for Helmholtz’ equation
Solution of periodic boundary value problems is of interest in various branches of science and engineering such as optics, electromagnetics and mechanics. In our previous studies we have developed a periodic Fast Multipole Method (FMM) as a fast solver of wave problems in periodic domains. It has been found, however, that the convergence of the iterative solvers for linear equations slows down ...
متن کاملA broadband fast multipole accelerated boundary element method for the three dimensional Helmholtz equation.
The development of a fast multipole method (FMM) accelerated iterative solution of the boundary element method (BEM) for the Helmholtz equations in three dimensions is described. The FMM for the Helmholtz equation is significantly different for problems with low and high kD (where k is the wavenumber and D the domain size), and for large problems the method must be switched between levels of th...
